Arizona State University Sun Devils

Pride in the Desert

ASU Intercollegiate Athletics oversees and manages all Sun Devil athletic programs at the university and has a proud tradition of athletic excellence. Over 500 ASU student athletes compete in 22 sport programs in the Pac-10 conference, arguably one of the country's most competitive arenas. Sun Devil student athletes face strenuous academic and athletic requirements, balancing training and competition schedules while achieving outstanding results in the classroom. Thanks to the support of Sun Angel Foundation donors and alumni, ASU student athletes have risen to the challenge in the classroom and on the playing field.

In addition to the national championship titles and Pac-10 conference success, ASU has also received national attention through the development of the Scholar-Baller program, becoming the first athletic department in the nation to recognize student athletes with a patch on their jersey for academic success.

ASU Athletics recently finished in 10th place out of 117 division I teams in the United States Sports Academy Directors Cup, recognizing the overall performances of athletic departments across the nation.

For the past four years, ASU has been in the top seven nationally and number one in the Pac-10 for most Academic All-Americans, with 12 student athletes earning Academic All-American status this past year.

Sun Devil student athletes provided over 1,300 hours of community service, touching over 40,000 people in Tempe and surrounding community.

Scott Pera

Assistant Basketball Coach

Pera's path is similar to that of current ASU Associate Head Coach Mark Phelps, who has been part of Coach Sendek's staff for 11 years. Phelps joined Coach Sendek's North Carolina State staff in 1996 as the Wolfpack Director of Operations after a successful high school coaching career in Virginia.

Mike Haynes

Hall of Fame Cornerback

The last time Arizona State fans saw cornerback Mike "Luxury" Haynes in maroon and gold, he was helping lead the 1975 ASU football team to the school's only undefeated season (12-0), a Fiesta Bowl victory and the best finish ever of any Sun Devils squad with a No. 2 national ranking. He then became a first-round NFL draft selection by the New England Patriots. As a Sun Devil, he earned All-America honors twice and All-Western Athletic Conference honors three times. Haynes is one of only 12 consensus All-Americans in the history of the Sun Devils program, and his 11 interceptions in 1974 still stands as the second-most in school history. Those accomplishments helped earn him enshrinement in the College Football Hall of Fame as well as a retired number at Sun Devil Stadium.
